Obesity Medicine 2025 - Dietary Interventions for Obesity with and without GLP-1s (Recorded)

For decades, the recommended treatment for obesity seemed to be just "eat less." Eat less fat. Eat less sugar. Eat less red meat. Eat less overall. Past phamacologic interventions for obesity treatment had limited effectiveness against an American diet culture of highly palatable foods. Now, with the advent of highly effective GLP-1s, the landscape has changed. Many patients are turning to medications to lose weight and are experiencing great success, which is exciting. But not everyone has access to or can tolerate these medications. Due to shortages and changing insurance coverage, not everyone is able to stay on these medications. In this session, we will discuss dietary interventions for obesity that are patient-centered and culturally appropriate. We will focus less on "eat less" advice and more on "eat more" advice, incorporating the concepts of calorie and nutrient density to emphasize a diet that is simultaneously effective for weight loss, satiety, and overall metabolic health. For those who are on GLP-1s, the goal is not just to reduce calories but to prioritize maintaining nutrient intake, minimize muscle loss, and maximize tolerability of the GLP-1 medication. Throughout, there will be an emphasis on evidence-based, practical, accessible, and affordable food options. By the end of this session, clinicians will be able to provide basic dietary advice to their patients with obesity — both those who are on GLP-1s and those who are not.
