Obesity Medicine 2025 - The Challenges in Obesity Medicine in Disadvantaged Communities (Recorded)
Practicing obesity medicine in a disadvantaged community poses several unique challenges. Access to nutritious foods is difficult in food swamps and food deserts. Physical activity is also significantly constrained by the built environment and finances, limiting options for patients in lower socioeconomic status communities. Finally, coverage of anti-obesity medication is lacking in many disadvantaged communities. This talk will provide an overview of nutritional and physical activity interventions that are feasible for patients of limited means. It will also provide information on pharmacologic options that are affordable to patients that do not otherwise have coverage for AOMs. We will share nutritional resources including tips for meal planning, creative ways to help patients budget for food, maximizing SNAP benefits, and working with food banks to improve access to nutritious food. We will also review effective home-based exercises that can be utilized to help patients of all mobility levels to meet activity goals. Finally, we will review safe usage of generic medications and patient assistance programs to facilitate usage of effective anti-obesity medication.
