Obesity Medicine 2026 - Disordered Eating in Pediatric Obesity: Diagnosis to Treatment (Recorded)
Disordered eating behaviors are more prevalent among children and adolescents with obesity than their typical-weight peers. These behaviors not only diminish health-related quality of life but can also complicate treatment outcomes. Understanding the intersection of disordered eating and obesity, both medically and psychologically, is essential to providing effective, compassionate care. Recognizing how these issues present in youth helps clinicians support engagement, deliver best-practice interventions, and ensure that patients and families feel heard and understood. This session will help providers distinguish between disordered eating and eating disorders, understand how to assess each, and recognize how these patterns may present in patients prescribed obesity medications (OMs). Practical, evidence-informed treatment strategies will be offered for managing disordered eating in patients both on and off OMs. Through case-based learning, participants will also learn to identify disordered eating behaviors, apply appropriate interventions, and determine when and how to refer patients for specialized eating disorder care.
