American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM)
The American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) maintains standards for assessment and credentialing physicians in obesity medicine. Earning this certification sets physicians apart as having demonstrated competency in obesity care. The OMA provides accredited education to prepare physicians for the annual exam.
Obesity Pillars® is an open-access online-only journal published by the Obesity Medicine Association in collaboration with Elsevier. Our medical journal is dedicated to publishing evidence-based research for health care clinicians in the field of obesity medicine. Obesity Pillars® serves as a resource to assist clinicians to deliver patient-centered obesity medicine care in alignment with the OMA’s four pillars of obesity treatment: Nutrition Therapy, Physical Activity, Behavioral Modification, Medical Interventions
Obesity: A Disease is the official OMA podcast exploring the many facets of the disease of obesity. Episodes provide valuable insights into this growing problem and better equip clinicians to understand and engage in treating this disease.

The Obesity Algorithm® is an essential tool for any practice; it contains updated information on the mechanisms, evaluation, and treatment of obesity, including why obesity is a disease, how obesity causes the most common metabolic diseases encountered in clinical practice, and how to treat obesity to reduce disease risk.
The Obesity Algorithm® outlines a comprehensive framework for the clinical assessment and management of obesity as a chronic disease. It begins with a thorough evaluation of the patient, including weight history, neuropsychiatric and social factors, potential secondary or genetic causes of obesity, and the identification of weight-related metabolic and biomechanical complications. The algorithm then emphasizes the role of lifestyle assessment and counseling, guiding clinicians to evaluate nutrition, eating behaviors, physical activity, and sleep while providing structured counseling on behavior change, nutrition, and exercise. It also describes how to develop and manage an individualized, long-term treatment plan that may include anti-obesity medications, bariatric devices, or metabolic and bariatric surgery when appropriate. Finally, the algorithm highlights professional responsibilities in obesity medicine, including maintaining clinical competence, reducing weight stigma, advocating for patients, and promoting broader awareness of obesity as a complex chronic disease.
