Obesity Medicine 2026 - From Policy to Patients: Advocacy Strategies to Protect Access to Obesity Care (Recorded)

Patients across the country are increasingly losing access to evidence-based obesity treatments as commercial and government health plan policies, formularies, and benefit designs change—often without warning and transparency. In this session, participants will learn how the OMA is engaging in proactive advocacy at the state and federal levels to expand and protect existing obesity coverage. The presentation will then discuss how obesity providers can best protect their practices in the current environment. The presenters will use real-world cases, including GLP-1 agonist coverage and employer/Medicare benefit redesigns, to walk from policy to patients and show how these decisions disrupt clinical care and everyday workflow in an obesity medicine practice. By the end of this session, participants will be able to describe how current policy and coverage changes are affecting access in their own setting, analyze specific patient cases where benefit design creates barriers, and develop at least one practical advocacy step—at the practice, community, or policy level—to help expand access for every patient.
