Overcoming Obesity 2023 - Obesity and Mental Health: Special Clinical Considerations and Overcoming Stigma (Recorded) PB25

This case-based instructional session will be presented by quadruple board-certified psychiatrist, Dr. Tiffani Bell Washington and Dr. Sylvia Gonsahn-Bollie. This presentation aims to give learners insights into the significant and bidirectional association between obesity and mental health disorders. The session will emphasize the latest research exploring the biological connections between obesity and mental health conditions. Furthermore, learners will understand the clinical implications of weight-inducing pharmacology, motivational interviewing, lifestyle changes, eating behaviors, and compounded stigma due to biases against weight and mental health. These biases are further amplified in minority populations and can drive disparities in communities disproportionately impacted by obesity. After this session, learners will be more aware of the connections between obesity and mental health not previously considered and equipped with practical clinical interventions.
