Obesity Medicine 2026 - GLP-1 Timing after Bariatric Surgery: A Case-Based Guide (Recorded)

GLP-1 receptor agonists have revolutionized obesity treatment—but their role after bariatric surgery remains a clinical gray zone. Should GLP-1s be continued immediately post-op? Delayed until weight regain? Used selectively in high-risk patients? Current guidelines offer little direction, and practice patterns vary widely across institutions. This case-based session addresses one of the most frequently asked questions in contemporary obesity medicine: When should GLP-1s be started after bariatric surgery—and for whom?

Using real-world clinical scenarios, we’ll explore how to personalize timing based on surgery type (sleeve, bypass, SADI), weight trajectory, comorbidity status, nutritional risk, and patient preference. Attendees will walk through cases of patients who plateau early, experience relapse, or have concurrent diabetes, fatty liver disease, or cardiovascular disease. Each case will be followed by a discussion of medication decision points, evidence-based rationale, and coordination with surgical and nutrition teams. By the end of this session, clinicians will be able to confidently approach GLP-1 timing in post-op patients using a structured, patient-centered framework that aligns with current best practices.
