Obesity Medicine 2025 - Behavior, Cognition and Metabolism - Brain Pathophysiology in Obesity (Recorded)

While lifestyle change is fundamental to obesity treatment, it is well known that long-lasting and sustained behavior modification is challenging for patients. This is due to numerous factors such as obesogenic environments, lack of access to healthy foods, limited nutrition education, and conflicting advice. There are over 30 overlapping and even contradictory behavioral modification theories based on patients’ thoughts and beliefs. Evidence for these theories is weak, has low predictive power, and leaves clinicians without clear guidance on how they should be applied in practice. This presentation focuses on the science of brain metabolism and pathophysiology which have subsequent effects on patient behavior. By understanding and addressing these pathophysiologic changes, obesity medicine clinicians can better serve and support their patients to achieve meaningful and sustainable lifestyle changes for better health.
