OMA 2023 Spring Summit: A Family Centered Approach to the Treatment of Obesity (On Demand)

The initial contact with a child with obesity and their family is a critical part of patient care. Appreciation of a number of factors is important: 1) Recognizing child’s and family’s previous experiences with the healthcare system 2) Helping the child and family understand that obesity is a disease 3) Clarifying to the child and the family that the disease is not their fault 4) Educating the child and family regarding interdisciplinary pediatric management of obesity 5) Identifying the possible existence of internalized bias. 6) Identifying the possible existence of aspects of bias and stigma in the office setting Utilizing lived experiences as well as provider experiences. Finally, suggestions will be made as to how to increase the chances of a productive initial contact.
