Overcoming Obesity 2023 - Analysis of Factors Associated with Prior Authorization Decisions for Weight Loss Prescriptions (Recorded)
Obesity is a metabolic disease that requires lifelong lifestyle changes and in many patients who are overweight or obese, prescription medication. Left untreated, people with excess body fat are at higher risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, stroke, and death.
The problem: Insurance companies set roadblocks for approval of weight loss medications and often deny coverage for a myriad of reasons with no obvious pattern. This causes a delay in care and under treatment of patients with associated labor costs absorbed by the health care facilities processing the paperwork, i.e., Prior Authorizations.
We plan an interactive session where participants will apply design thinking instructional methodology to analyze this problem. Design thinking is an iterative process and a solution-focused methodology used to solve complex problems. The model proposed by Hasso-Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford consists of 5 stages: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test.
