2026-2027 Certification Eligibility Requirements Checklist

Required Credentials

Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

☐ Hold an active, unrestricted medical license in the United States or Canada. Note: Training licenses are not accepted.

☐ Provide proof of completion of a residency program in the United States or Canada.

☐ Maintain active board certification through an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) member board or Osteopathic Medicine equivalent. Waived for physicians licensed and trained in Canada.


Required CME Credits

Applicants must meet all CME requirements below:

☐ Complete a minimum of 60 CME credits on the topic of obesity.

☐ Ensure all CME credits are one of the following:

AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™

AOA Category 1-A

Mainpro-M1

☐ For the 2026 and 2027 testing cycle, all CME credits must be earned within 36 months prior to the application deadline.

☐ Complete at least 30 ABOM-designated Group One credits during the 2026 and 2027 testing cycle. All Obesity Medicine Association (OMA) CME activities qualify as ABOM Group One credits and are offered as AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ activities in both online and in-person formats.

☐ Take up to all 60 required CME credits as ABOM-designated Group One credits if desired — meaning all 60 credits may be completed through OMA.

The American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) maintains standards for assessment and credentialing physicians in obesity medicine. Earning this certification sets physicians apart as having demonstrated competency in obesity care. The OMA provides accredited education to prepare physicians for the annual exam.
